NPC houses and your base

The rules a room must pass before a town NPC moves in.

Room rules

The in-game hint: (In order for a room to be considered a home, it needs to have a door, a chair, a table, and a light source. Make sure the house has walls as well.)

The room needs at least 60 tiles of open space and fewer than 750. The cheapest room: a Wooden Door (from Door), a Wooden Chair (crafted at Work Bench), a Wooden Table (crafted at Work Bench) or Work Bench (crafted by hand) (it counts as a table), a Torch (found in chests Chest (Surface)) and Wood Wall (crafted at Work Bench) behind. A Wood Platform (crafted by hand) in the wall or floor counts as a door.

When the check fails

The failure messages: This room is too small. This room is too big. This room is missing a wall. This room has no space to stand in!

Natural walls in this room need replacing! Cave walls do not count as house walls. Replace them with walls you place.

Where to put each NPC

Each town NPC likes and dislikes zones and neighbours, and that changes prices. Plan it with the NPC happiness planner.

Laying out a base

Stack the rooms in a tower joined by platforms, so one shaft reaches every floor. Keep crafting stations in one room next to your chests.
